CATASTROPHE IN THE SPECTRUM WARS: SPACEX SIGNS FOR 800 MHz AND THREATENS TO BECOME YOUR PHONE COMPANY

On Thursday, October 8, SpaceX announced a deal for up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum nationwide, so Starlink Mobile can reach phones inside buildings. The deal still needs final FCC approval. The same week, the FCC approved SpaceX's 15,000-satellite Gen2 phone constellation. Musk: "To those who understand the spectrum wars, it's an earthquake."

Yesterday's disaster

By Noleetah Alset, H.A.T.E. correspondent

Brace yourselves, wireless industry. At 3:19 PM CT on Thursday, October 8, SpaceX posted: "We announced an agreement to acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum license portfolio that will pave the way for @Starlink to become a major mobile carrier in the US." The company's update page fills in the damage: up to 14 megahertz of paired spectrum in the 800 MHz band. SpaceX calls it "prime low-band spectrum" that "addresses one of the key remaining technical gaps." Low-band is about reach. SpaceX says it gives Starlink Mobile "a coverage layer that ensures Starlink Mobile's signal penetrates through obstacles, such as walls," so phones get service "even when they are in buildings." And then the cruelest line of all: "most existing mobile devices already support this underused band."

Now the fine print, because we are a responsible disaster outlet. The deal still needs final FCC approval. SpaceX has not said who it is buying from or what it is paying. Once it's approved, SpaceX plans to pair its satellites with "an advanced terrestrial deployment," and says Starlink Mobile "can now become the first network operator to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum."

Then the regulators piled on. SpaceX says the FCC approved its Starlink Mobile Gen2 application this week, authorizing 15,000 satellites optimized for 2 GHz spectrum. SpaceX says those V2 satellites will deliver "more than 100 times the bandwidth of our current generation." The FCC also authorized the full range of backhaul bands (Ka/V/E/W) that Starlink's V3 broadband satellites use. Musk's review at 3:39 PM CT: "This is the last critical piece of the spectrum puzzle needed for SpaceX to provide complete phone coverage in America." At 4:31 PM CT, replying to Chamath Palihapitiya, he added: "To the casual observer, this won't seem like much. To those who understand the spectrum wars, it's an earthquake." The day before, he had called the V2 phone satellites "incredible." Somewhere, a phone carrier's coverage map just got nervous.

ELSEWHERE IN THE WRECKAGE

CREW-12 CAME HOME AND RUINED EVERYONE'S DOOM THREAD: Dragon splashed down in the Pacific off Los Angeles at 10:34 AM CT on Thursday, October 8 (8:34 a.m. PT), according to NASA's space station account. Two minutes later SpaceX posted: "Splashdown of Dragon confirmed!" On board were NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev. NASA says the mission lasted 237 days and covered "100 million miles in orbit," with research into medicine, quantum science and 3D-printing with metal. NASA's entire statement of grievance: "Welcome home!"

TERAFAB: MUSK TELLS TSMC IT CAN SUBLEASE, NOT STEER: At 1:33 AM CT on Wednesday, October 7, Musk replied to a thread about TSMC exploring a role in Terafab: "No, we will build and run the fab. Let there be ZERO doubt about that. Maybe TSMC subleases part of the Terafab if they want, but nothing more than that." For scale, SpaceX's August 6 Terafab update says combined SpaceX and Tesla chip demand is expected to exceed 1 terawatt of compute. It also says Terafab will be built in Grimes County, Texas, and that the first phase needs about $16.8 billion in capital investment. You may have seen claims that TSMC shares hit records or that Intel's stock wobbled. That is market chatter, not a company statement, so we're not printing it as fact.

GROK BOT NOW HIRES OUTSIDE CONTRACTORS: At 1:46 AM CT on October 7, Musk posted: "Going forward, @SpaceX will use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs. Whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome." That afternoon the official @bot account announced: "Grok Bot can now search, read, and monitor X." On October 8 it added: "Grok Bot can now help run your Shopify store." Musk's late-night review: "Using Grok @Bot is like hiring a super smart, hard-working person for peanuts."

YOUR TESLA IS NOW A GENERATOR, AND CALIFORNIA'S POWERWALLS FORMED A POWER PLANT: On October 6, Tesla Energy said "Powershare Home Backup is now available for new Model 3 & Model Y with Powerwall 3" and can "extend your home backup by over 2 days." On October 7, Tesla said it is "available for all Cybertrucks & new Model 3/Y ordered on or after Oct 1 this year." Then on October 8 Tesla Energy reported a new record for its largest Powerwall virtual power plant event: "On Tuesday, 85,000+ Powerwall owners across California dispatched more than 600 MW to the grid, helping to meet peak demand." That was "less than a month" after the previous record.

STARLINK KEEPS BOARDING PLANES AND PHONES: On October 8, @Starlink said it "will deliver fast, reliable connectivity across @AmericanAir's full mainline fleet." American's own announcement puts that at more than 1,000 aircraft, with installations starting in 2027. On October 7, Starlink said "Starlink Mobile is now available in Bangladesh with @banglalinkmela," so customers can message over apps and share their location "in cellular dead zones." It also launched a referral offer: refer a friend and both of you get $100, with rewards varying by market.

NEURALINK FRIDAY: TERRY, WHO HAS ALS, IS SPEAKING AGAIN IN HIS OWN VOICE. THE ONLY CASUALTY IS THE "THAT'S SCIENCE FICTION" TAKE. On September 18, 2026, Neuralink posted that in its VOICE trial, Terry "is using his Neuralink implant to help fine-tune a brain-to-voice interface for himself and others who can't speak." He trained it "first by miming speech as best he could, then by simply thinking the words and hearing them come out in his own natural voice." The voice is powered by Grok Voice from @SpaceXAI. In Neuralink's video "Speaking With The Mind" (youtube.com/watch?v=_j806JHhCRo), Terry is introduced as the third participant in the voice study. His implant sits in the speech motor region and has 3,000 channels. His first decoded sentence: "Hello, how are you doing today?" Later he says: "Neuralink has given me back my voice." Neuralink has not published accuracy or speed numbers for the VOICE trial, and the device is still investigational.

Also in the pile: at 4:55 PM CT on October 8, Musk posted: "This will sound super crazy, but I see a path to SpaceX being worth orders of magnitude more than the current Earth economy." He said "orders of magnitude," not just "more." Falcon 9's launch of the Space Development Agency's fourth Tranche 1 data transport mission from Vandenberg is now targeted for no earlier than October 10. SpaceX says "the rocket and payload remain healthy."

The compli-insult pivot

Credit where it's cruel

Here's the painful part: none of this is a scandal. SpaceX signed for nationwide 800 MHz spectrum that it says will get Starlink Mobile through walls, and the FCC approved 15,000 next-generation phone satellites. The deal still needs final FCC approval, and SpaceX hasn't named a price. Crew-12 came home safely after 237 days. Musk put it in writing: "we will build and run the fab," and TSMC can at most sublease space. Grok Bot can now hand a job to whichever AI model does it best. And 85,000+ California Powerwalls pushed more than 600 MW onto the grid on a Tuesday. Snarky, yes. Made up, no. The receipts are below.
